If you want to get the most bang for your buck on Instagram, hashtags are key. But your efforts are wasted if you’re wildly throwing them out. I’ll share the tips I use to ensure the greatest reach for my posts.
Find Like Minded People
Start by looking at photos which are like the type of photos you post. If you post mostly dog photos go on a search for dog pictures. Click on the hashtags being used. What you’re looking for is a hashtag between 75,000 and 300,000 posts. This is the sweet spot as it allows you to become one of the “top posts” almost every time you share an image.
If you are only posting to #Summer, which has over 320 million posts, your picture will get lost in the madness. A hashtag with 100,000 post will be popular enough for people to check out, but not enough for your image to get buried within seconds of posting. Make a list of these tags to add to your line up.
Keep A List On Your Phone
Once you know your image genre (e.g. Travel, Sports, Fashion, ETC.) make your life easier by keeping 15 or so hashtags on your phone to use on all your pictures. Open up the notes app and start adding. Every time you post just copy and paste.
Start wide and work narrow.
When looking for your “Sweet spot” hashtags, Start wide and work narrow. As an example I use #Adventure, which is a pretty broad topic but still applies to my images. But I’ll also narrow things down and use #RockClimbing, or I’ll use the hashtag for the type of camera I’m using like #DJIGlobal or #MediumFormat
You want a range of broad and narrow terms to give your image the best chance of being seen.
Tag the Manufacturer
If your shot features a product or service, tag the people in charge. You never know when they might feature your on picture on their page, netting you a ton of likes and some new followers.
Use your location
An easy way to make your picture more searchable is to tag the location of the shot. Whenever I’m traveling to a new place I always check it out on Instagram first. If your shot resonates, it can be a top post for an entire city!
I hope these tips help you on your journey to become an Instagram master!
